Co-Parenting vs. Parallel Parenting

Co-Parenting vs. Parallel Parenting

A common question from parents in conflict is, “What is the difference between Co-parenting and Parallel Parenting?”

Co-parenting is only an option when the parents get along.  It requires frequent communication and the ability to calmly discuss the issues related to your child without bringing up personal issues in the divorce.

Parallel Parenting is an option for parents that feel that engaging with the other parent causes too much conflict and disruption for the children.  Here are 4 guidelines that may help you with parallel parenting:

  1. Never use your children as messengers.  Instead, put all communication and questions in writing (email or texting works best).
  2. Do not change the schedule without a written agreement.
  3. Do not share any personal information and stop following each other on social media.
  4. Communication should be business-like and only related to the health and well-being of the children. There is no derogatory language or name calling.

The good news is that the Tennessee Permanent Parenting Plan maps out your entire parenting schedule.  Visit our monthly free clinic to learn more about your options or contact our office for a free consultation.
