Divorce Name Change – Pros and Cons

Divorce Name Change – Pros and Cons

Divorce name change in Tennessee

So you are getting divorced.  Are you wondering about a divorce name change? You have one free (or shall we say included with the filing fee) chance to change your name!

Pros:

  • If you have children, there is no confusion at school
  • You don’t need to change any of your current documents or identification

Cons:

  • Changing your name on all of your official documents and cards (driver’s license, passport, credit cards, etc)
  • If you decide to change your name later, you have to pay a filing fee and make a Motion for Namechange
  • People might still think you are married to your Ex

Remember that changing your name is a personal decision. Consequently, your Ex spouse cannot force you to revert to your maiden. Additionally, you cannot be forced to keep your married name.  Therefore, it’s completely up to you!  For more information, consult your Tennessee or go to THIS SITE.

If you can’t decide now, you can always change your name in the future. To do this, you will need to file a Petition for Name Change. Remember there will be a filing fee for the Petition for Name Change. You will likely need a brief court appearance.  Therefore, many people choose to hire an attorney to help them with the paperwork.  Good luck whatever you decide!
